Monarch Bay Golf Club is a Public, 27 hole golf course facility located in San Leandro, California. The facility has the 18 hole Tony Lema course and the Executive 9-hole Marina course. Additionally there a state-of-the-art all weather double decker lighted driving range.
Monarch Bay Golf Course was formerly known as the San Leandro Golf Club, The San Leandro Golf Club course first opened for play in 1983 and was designed by William F. Bell. The course underwent a redesign and renaming and in 2001 re-opened as the Monarch Bay Golf Club.
Both the 18-hole Tony Lema Course and the 9-hole executive Marina Course, were overhauled by golf architect John Harbottle III (R).
The Tony Lema Course remains one of the most authentic links style courses in the Bay Area and the back nine offers spectacular views of downtown San Francisco. The regulation Tony Lema Course is wide open, and there are only a few trees that can affect your shots. The undulating greens are medium in size and slow in speed. There are scenic views of the San Francisco Bay that accompany the golfer all around the Lema Course. Afternoon breezes off the bay make the golfer feel they are playing a traditional links-style course. Set just feet from the San Francisco Bay, the Monarch Bay Golf Course provides ideal course conditions, stunning views of the Peninsula and 18 challenging holes of golf making it one of the most exciting courses in the Bay Area.
In addition to the redesign, a new state-of-the-art all weather double decker lighted driving range was constructed on site. The club is also home to a Nike Golf Learning Center.

Greens great. Fairways and Tee boxes have a real need for some TLC or a new superintendent

PROS: Great place to play in early morning hours CONS: Don't go after 10am on the weekends, check for tourneys because they tend to double book tourneys. Hence the extremely so play, besides the winds pick up in the PM hours.

Pace of play was excellent, but this was NFL Conference Championship Sunday, so that helped. Considering the amount of rain the previous weeks, the course was in good condition. Carts were allowed on the fairways of most holes. The layout is links style, with some elevation changes and challenging holes. Tony Lema is not your typical wide open, flat muni, it does have some character and is reasonably priced.

Greens had been recently sanded; but when making reservation no prior notice of that fact. Pace was slow - 5 hour round. Good sandwiches in clubhouse. Course is not particularly long. It is a links-like design with few OB areas unless you are completely off the course. Next to San Francisco Bay the winds can be heavy and make this a tough challenge. I played on a nice sunny day with slight breeze. Not particularly difficult.

Nice to play when there is minimal wind, like the new carts

Depending on the tee time, it can be expensive although one needs to drive an extra 10-15 more miles out of SF just to get to a better course for the same fee. What Monarch has going for it is proximity and ambiance. It is a good layout built right alongside the East Bay. On a good day, one can see across the water to San Mateo, SF, some of Oakland. Planes can also be seen going in for landings. Very cool place but very windy in the afternoons for twilighters. Then again, it always gets windy anywhere in the Bay Area in the afternoon anyway.

I play this course a couple times a month. Excellent value for mid-week senior golfers. Nice links style layout with few trees, but quite a few fairway bunkers to make up for it. Easy for a single to pick up a game. Wind off the bay can be a challenge, especially during the summer months. Friendly staff, adequate driving range and practice facilities.

Our day was impacted by a frost delay and we had one of those PGA foursomes in front of us (wait until the green clears from 300 yds out, everyone hit in turn, stand by your partners ball until he hits and THEn cross the fairway to your ball, take 40 practice swings etc....) Once we got the marshals attention it got better. This is a course that has lots of Ducks on it so be prepard for a little duck poop but overall the layout is fun and there are some nice looking holes. it's not perfect but it is a daily use course in reasonable condition with great food at the turn and great views of the bay and San Francisco

Nice condition course. Slope rating is a little high for difficulty. Lots of sand, but fairways wide with few natural hazards.

Decent course. Greens had been sanded recently so were in good shape but slow. Pace of play can be slow.
